If you close your eyes, you’d think you were standing in the presence of Thao Nguyen, with those creamy vocals that fall on your ears and leave you more calm than when you came. And when you open them, you’re left with a few new friends by the name of The Box Tiger, a new indie act from the backyards of Toronto with a modest year under their belt. There is something commanding about frontwoman, Sonia Sturino. Something that makes her sound a little older than she really is. Sturino has yet to graduate to the kind of rasp of Heartless Bastards, but for now there is a sweetness to her that fits her yellow sneakers. With the harmonies of Glenn Tavas, the stripped-down version of The Box Tiger filled Bellwoods with an inviting sound, something warm to rival the autumn-like afternoon that prematurely peaked into summer’s month.
